universal joints?

Hi all, I have all of my drivelines out while I am working on upgrading my zook.

I figured while they were sitting there on the floor, I'd ask you all this question.

How do you tell if the universal joints are starting to be goin out?
what kind of test or observation can I do to get a feel if they are good or going bad.

I figured I would replace the ones goin out while the drivelines were out.

thanks in advance for your input.

Re: universal joints?

Grab the shaft in your hand and rotate the joint around in circles, making sure to get the full range of motion, then applying pressure while doing it.

(good thing I'm not a pervert or that could have sounded funny!)

You should be able to 'feel" the joint, but it should be smooth. if there is any roughness, binding, or stiffness, it probably needs to be replaced. If you feel nothing, it's good, throw it back in.

You have to have the driveshaft out to do this, it won't work on the vehicle, and it's best if you're "looking" for something wrong. When in doubt, better to be safe than sorry, but I wouldn't replace them "just because", they're easy enough to do it if you pick up a vibration later.

Re: universal joints?

Jeepn,
totally leed my mind into the cutter.....................................haha
I was not thinking anything till you mentioned something,
then reading it again and YES it does sound bad........

thanks for the info, I will go through each one tonight.

my shafts are out right now, so I can look for what you are talking about...

The intermediate shaft right at the t-case makes a slight creek sound, so that one will get replaced for sure.

Re: universal joints?

You guys are BAD, just BAD, BAD, BAD!

Shame on you all.

I just hope the wife doesn't read this, she'll ban me from working on the Zuk or the Jeep.

I honestly wasn't trying to make it sound like that. Think about writing it differently, kinda hard isn't it?

There I go again!

Time to hit the hay...
