OK, I'm on a mission to make this board a more streamlined and well-oiled machine. I mentioned yesterday that we need to educate each other to aviod repitition and annoyances.

(deep breath)
When you respond to a message, make sure you've got the message you want to respond to current on your screen before you hit the reply link. I can't count the amount of times I've gotten a response in my email that made absolutely no sense to what I had just posted. This is because someone is reading the whole thread before they post (presumably to see if someone has already posted their thoughts on the matter), and then they hit any of the 'reply' links. Well, it's great that your contributing, but the person you were wantin' to directly respond to will have to find your post by a stroke of luck. In the meantime, some cat like me is momentarily befuddled as to why you replied the way you did.

SO, when you've finished your reading and want to reply, navigate back to the exact message you want to respond directly to, and hit that 'reply' link.

(gasp!)
And don't forget to search before you post!
Thanks for your time!/wwwthreads_images/icons/laugh.gif

This is not so much the fault of the people who post. It's not a very good system. I wasn't even aware that people got emailed posts. I don't and I'm sure a lot of other people don't either.

If you visit the BBS often why bother having your replys to your e-mail?? When i read a post,,, I am lazy.... I don't want to scroll all the way up top and click on the "Proper" Reply button.... So here's my quote to you...

Peace out!!

Hey, I have to work, too. I don't hit the board a lot. I use my email to notify me of posts on subjects that I'm really interested in (and usually working on). I don't always have time to browse thru all the other stuff. Also, I want to minimize the amount of time I have to spend on this board, so I can spend that saved time wrenchin' on my zook, or (god forbid) being with my family. I go out of my way to make my posts meaningful and save the time of the people who read them. This is called respect. If you're too 'lazy' to bother returnin' that respect, perhaps you shouldn't even bother steppin' into the kitchen. 'Cause it's not a matter of the kitchen's heat, it's knowin' how to use the tools in it to make somethin' worth eating (or reading, if you will).

Capn_Crunch, you're an 'Old Hand, to date you have posted 823 times! You've never once in all that time noticed the checkbox option under every post dialog that says "Email all replies to my real email address"? It's checked by default! If you're not getting emails when people respond to your posts, then you must have a bad email address set up in your profile. I looked at your profile, and the email address listed is Mightydoor@AOL.com. Is this current? It's worth lookin' into...

I know it. I dig your html posts that show people the proper way to reply, set up links and whatnaught. I always thought it was valuable, and now I'm jumpin' on your bandwagon and maybe we can make twice as much racket. This is not a hodge-podge chat forum. This bbs is a tool to be used to improve our samurai skills! If we want to keep the newbies and the experts in one place, then we have to keep down the improper use of the board. This means educating the readers. It's hard to do that without insultin' them. No matter how hard I try to be nice about it, someone takes offense. Well, too bad! This is the 21st centuary! Computers are here to stay! Let's figure them out!

Pillard, on mine it's not checked by default, you have to check it yourself to get replies by email. Looks like you didn't know something about the board, just like I didn't know that when I hit any reply it went to the person as well as the board. Guess we all have some things to learn about this BBS!
Guess I'm gonna be reading up on how this thing works

Wait a sec this is a public board and you pillard don't control it. I am very offended that you are on here wasting our time and yours to piss and moaning about this. You made a valid point at the beginning of this and now you are just complaining. We got the idea. We are sorry we waste you oh so valuable time. There, is that what you want to hear? I mean really. Have you ever heard of adding insult to injury. If you don't like the board and have out grown it then leave.

Hey Flip, I never claimed to know everything about the board, and I'm as willing to learn anything I can to help make our reading expirience as easy as it can be as I expect the rest of you to. So, to that end, I've done about 35 seconds worth of research and found out why your checkbox is not by default checked! If you edit your profile, and click on the "Email Notifications/Subscriptions" link, on the following page there's a checkbox option labeled "Do you want all replies to posts that you make emailed to you?" If you check "Yes", then, by default, everytime you post, that email option will be checked for you.

Yo Ppillard;
I really appreciate your comments on ways to improve this board. I'm still a relative "newbie" and have a lot to learn..... Of course, at one time every single person here was a "newbie"... I did not realize that you could not hit any of the reply buttons to respond to the original post... I just found that out in the last day or so... Just this morning, I received this message in my e-mail box..."Suzukigoot, call me at home sometime. We still need to get together. I am an ASE cert. mechanic, and can probably help ya. Besides, I want to see your Zuk! 682-7919".... I certainly hope that the intended recipient gets this obviously important message!!!

In light of what occurred on September 11, I would hope that ALL OF US will take the time to extend patience and respect to one another... even when we disagree with their comments or opinions...

Ppillard, Thanx again for your comments... You are definitely not wasting my time...

Never said you knew evrything about the board and never meant to imply you were a "know it all" The thing is though, is that you choose to recieve the emails to you post. I didn't choose that option. By you making that choice, then you run the risk of someone making a mistake and sending you an email that you don't understand. I agree that we should all read up and learn more about the sites we use, but I honestly didn't know about the reply button mailing stuff to the original poster as well as the list as I'm sure many people didn't know. My point in the last message was that once I pointed out the flaw in your post, you checked into it and figured out why mine was different, you also figured out that that box is not checked by default for everyone. I learned from you post that you get messages from the board in your email. We shared info and now we both know. I think patience should be the key here, and if you continue to get the mail that you asked for (whether it's the mail you WANT or not, you ask for all replies to be sent to your box)then maybe you should consider unchecking that box and going to the list at least until we figure out a way to get the info about the quirks of this list out to everyone.
BTW, I've heard you do some AutoCad stuff, I have Autodesk AutoCad 6.0 at home and am gonna try to learn to use it. Do you have any drawings laying around that you can send over for me to play with a bit?

Yeah, Hopefully, people reading our posts here will figure out all this fun stuff, and be able become better at posting. Which is why I dove right in to find out the exact details of the response emails. I wasn't kidding tho about it taking me 35 seconds to figure it out. And it was worth every one of those seconds. I did make a choice to revieve the responses via email, and I did so because it's a time saver. Even recieving others mistaken posts take less time than constantly watching the board for replies. That doesn't make it any less annoying.

But the real point of this whole thread isn't just to know everything about the board. It's tryin' to clean up the excess from the board so we won't drive off the old-hands. The redundancy and mis-use causes people to quit hitting this board, and their expirience and wisdom is something we can't afford to lose. I'm just tryin' to look at the long run and take some action today to help. The more we all know about how to post, the better and more concise our posts will be. If we know how to search the board, we will have to post less, eliminating those redundant posts I keep mentioning. If we can get all this to happen, then we increase the chance of keeping everyone happy with the board (not just me/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif!)

Look at you ... acting all big and tough....the way you talk to myself and others I would swear this was some big money making company...

things like..

"I don't always have time.." , "minimize the amount of time" ... and "This is not a hodge-podge chat forum."

Time is money... rush.. rush.. rush...

The bbs is not a tool!!!! your the tool....

the bbs is a meeting place for many people from around the WORLD... You don't own it... so don't try and control it....

just step back and look.. only about 20% of what gets posted is actually used to help or fix samurais.. the rest is just story's and funny stuff.. And ya know what else..?? this is a hodge-podge chat forum.

And don't get me started on respect.... I don't find it pleasing to see how you don't respect my right to be able to click on any visable/nearest reply button..

You poor soul... all your trying to do is educate us. hmmm.. Are you saying that just because i choose not to click that stupid little button under your posts makes me less intelligent.

It is too hard to please everyone.. there comes a time when nothing is resolved and you just have to deal with it!!!...

If you really want to be nice and not cheeze anyone about it.. Try not saying anything at all...!!
