Running very poorly... Need Help

1988 Samurai

Listed at the bottom is a point by point description of what is going on. I will try to make it as acurate and as short as possible. Any help would be great.

- Start the Sammy in the morning (first start of day), it will idle for a second and then die. The only way to keep it going is to hold the accerlerator down a bit for about 30 secs and then it will idle high. Once it has warmed up idling it starts to idle like [censored] (bogging, up and down engine speeds)
- When driving the engine seems to bog (like missing power). Sometimes after driving the car for approx. 30 min the problem goes away (sometimes)
- While coming to a stop the engine bogs down like it will stall and frequently it does stall. I have to hold the break and gas while stopped to keep it going.
- While stopped at a light the engine will try to die. If I push the pedal a bit to get the idle up it goes up for a second but starts having problems again. The way to keep it alive is to apply and release the pedal (reving).

Where should I start. I have a Sammy book at home but thought that a list member might have had the same problem or this is a common occurance in older sammies.

Thanks again.. Keep Zuk'n

Sounds like bad gas, or a plugged fuel filter.

95 'Kick 4 Door - Calmini header & exhaust = mo' power! YES!!!

Idle and fuel mixture could be off. Check the adjustment pins. Close them and then back them off again 1/2 turn at a time until it idles correctly. If you have to open it more than 1 1/2 turns, then there is a problem. Check your vaccuum lines, fuel filter, plugs.
Add an inline fuel filter near your carb so you can see if there is trash in your fuel. You may have trash in the gas tank as a result of rust or a faulty hose leading in or out of the tank.
It wouldn't hurt to add some Water Rid to your tank if you live in a humid climate. It binds the water molecules to the fuel so it burns in the cylinders, and expels it out with the exhaust.

Re: Running very poorly... Need Help

Do all above post confirm you have good fuel flow.

If your Sam is stock carb check electical idle switchs signals to ECM and solenoids confrim ECM is working via idle up on electric load.

Check and adjust choke carb linkages and hoses to make
sure they are good.

Stock carb on Sam is no cake walk, however with OEM service
manual 15-20 hours testing you can be an expert on it.

Sam stock carb running under ECM control is very efficient.
