only 3 cylinders...Need Advice

Engine missing, gas mileage down 5 mpg. I think my No. 1 cylinder is dead. Replaced plugs, plug wires, dist cap and rotor. Don't think it is electrical, plug fires when out and put to ground. But, with engine running if I pull wire off no. 1 no change at all.

Local mechanic thinks I have a problem with the exhaust valve on no. 1, burnt or staying open and letting gas out on compression stroke before cylinder can fire. Makes some sense. I had a valve ping for a long time, drove to Florida and back 850 miles) with gas on the floor most of the way. Got back and no valve ping, but engine missing. I adjusted the valce yesterday, no change.

Does what he says make sense? Anybody ever had this problem? Am I up for a valve job? If so, any idea of the cost? Thanks in advance.

Thanks Gray. Is there any way to check if that's the problem without pulling intake?

Get a can of starting fluid. With the engine running, spray starting fluid all around the intake gaskets...if the engine speeds up, you've found your problem.
I have to lean towards the bad valve...I have seen several Suzuki motors with bad valves...

Re: only 3 cylinders...Need Advice

I had the same problem with the #2 cylinder a few years ago. A friend of mine sprayed some carb cleaner on the intake at #2 and the motor revved up. New intake gasket and it ran like new. Buy some gasket remover because mine was stuck pretty good and you don't want to scrap the aluminum very much and risk scarring it up.

Re: only 3 cylinders...Need Advice

The intake manifold is a bit difficult to remove, but it CAN be done with a metric socket and open-end wrench.

Gather all your patience and a free afternoon for this one...

Oh, and do the carb cleaner test first...
