Pitman Arm Retaining Nut Size?

What size is the pitman arm retaining nut? My large sockets only go up to 28mm. Thanks.....

Re: Pitman Arm Retaining Nut Size?

Yeah, it was a major PITA. I did the borrow the puller from Auto Zone and broke the tool, went back and got another and tightened it till it felt like it was going to break too! Left it sit for a couple of hours with some WD40, and then I gave it a wack with my BFH and POP it's off. I hit the pittman arm on the end sideways like, 90 degrees from the retaining nut. Good luck with it!

Re: Pitman Arm Retaining Nut Size?

Crow,

Save yourself some headache. Soak the pitman real well for 24-hrs in some PB Blaster or WD or similar. Also, get a torch. Butane will do but one of those radio shack micro torches will be more precise.

Clean off the oil (so it won't burn) and heat the pitman on the outside around the steering box shaft. Then use two BHFs. Bob uses a maul and a 4# hammer. Place the maul on one side of the pitman, and smack the other with the BFH. You're trying to use the maul to support the pitman so the force of the blow affects the pitman the most. A few real good whacks should free it (if yer lucky).

If not, doing the same while a puller is attached can help.

This usually works, if not, you'll need to cut it.
