Backlash settings

Hey Guys,
I'm asking for a friend of mine. He just put his stock R&Ps back in and now his rear-end is getting hot. Could someone give me the backlash settings for the rear to help him out. It's an 88 1/2. Thanks all
Steve

Re: Backlash settings

And when you set them set them looser i.e. more towards the .0012 than .0008 it will cause alot less whining on the street.

Re: Backlash settings

Mike Shannon, when I put the locker in the rear of my '93 I could not use the original side gears because they are built different and won't work with a locker. Anyway, that has made it where I have a little whine on the highway now, because I just put everything back in it's original position except with side gears from an earlier model diff. Does it sound to you like the backlash is too much or not enough?

Re: Backlash settings

I've been doing them at 6-8 thousandths for years. Its been so long since I've looked at the factory manual on the subject though, I forget factory spec. The 6-8 has worked well for us for many years though.
