GRS 1 trans case w/ stock r&p

Does anybody run a GRS 1 ( 4.16 ) transfer case with the stock ring & pinion gearing. If you do, how does it do offroad ? Does it do okay in the rocks ? And do you lose 5th gear if you have big tires. Any info you guys have would help me alot . Thank You

I run a grs1 with 32" Mud-terrains and I can do 70mph on the expressway at around 3600rpm. I can use 5th gear for speeds of 45mph and up. (I have a 1.6L 8v engine) Offroad it is a great improvement over stock, but I would still rather have a grsII for serious rocks. Just my two cents

I use to run the GRS 1 with stock running gear. I actually enjoyed it. I had 32" tires under it as well. I went to 33s and needed more. I hardly ever hit 5th gear however. I only ran a few rocks but didn't have much trouble. I hardly ever use the clutch though. I would feather the gas instead and did quite well.

i run a 4.16 gear case with stock ring and pinion and its awesome... i have 30" tires, so that sets the gearing back to stock (except low range, which is almost doubled)... im sure i would be able to do 70 in 5th no problem, but my engine is tired and so is my tranny, so they slow me down...

get the gears, you WONT be dissapointed.

5th gear doesnt exist for me and I have GRS 1, stock diff, and 31x10.50 MT's. I do okay on the rocks. Remove your clutch kill switch and learn to use your starter motor on the rocks and move up to the GRSII and you'll have a decent rock climber and on road Sam.

Put the tranny in 1st gear, low range, and leave the clutch out. Then crank over the engine to start it up. As the starter kicks over it will also put power to the wheels. Once the engine is started you just let it continue idling along. No worrying about starting, possibly rolling backwards off the rock (or worse).

To do this in the Tacoma, just press the Clutch Cancel Start button on the left-hand side of the dash.

To unhook the clutch, you just unplug the electrical wires from the clutch pedal, then attach a jumper, like shown.

When I had the 29's under the Zuk, it would haul down the road, even up hill, 70 was no problem and I used 5th all the time. With the 31's under it, it was about the same, but I never had it up to 70, and with the 32's under it the damn thing just stopped running right, so I never had the chance to see how it went.

i run a 4.16 case with stock r&p's with 33's and i have no 5th gear. it does work nice offroad though. i am going to go with 5.38's as soon as possible. it crawls really good, but it could be better.
