Sweat the small stuff.....

Sometimes driving a Samurai can lead to a false sense of security. Being unstoppable, and unbreakable they sometimes lead you to believe that they don't need any maintenance either. I have been lulled into this false sense of security.
I have had my Zuk for 2 1/2 yrs., and never bothered to check the timing belt. I have put WELL over the 30000 miles that a new belt is supposed to last in that time, without a second thought....
Today it dawned on me...."Oh my God....The timing belt!!!". So I popped off the cover.....Wow, I didn't know a belt could get that bad, and not break!!! It is weather cracked to no end, and is missing chunks from the outside! Plus, the tensioner hasn't been tightening it, so it has an inch of play (probably what kept it from breaking! ).
My Zuk has about 200000 on it, and this belt has had to be on there since it turned 100000......scary! (just drove it 300 miles round trip to the Melt!!)
So just a friendly reminder....just because they are usually unstoppable....doesn't mean they don't wear out.
$12.99 at Autozone is better than $75 to the tow truck!!

Re: Sweat the small stuff.....

I'm in the process of looking for a belt and have had no luck yet. Mine is a 94 with the round tooth belt. Anyone know any numbers and brands for replacement. All I can find around here have the acme tooth belt.

Re: Sweat the small stuff.....

Skyhigh, I gave you the factory part numbers in your last post regarding your belt, if nothing else order them from dealership.

Re: Sweat the small stuff.....

Update....pics of the belt...It is factory Suzuki, and is stamped 87 I don't know if that is the year it was made or not. All hail the 200000 mile (maybe) timing belt!!

Re: Sweat the small stuff.....

Are you referring to the belt or the fingers. Looks like the fingers are weather cracked too.
