87 Samari

I am looking at a 1987 Suzuki Samari (It is not tagged on the outside) and is on an independent used car lot. It has a full steel top with roll bar, twin bucket seats, a full back seat, and is 2 door. The body is in good shape no visible "cancer" (rust). The paint job looks good with only a few chips, it has a bent rear bumper, but that appears to be the only damage. The tires are good. Mileage is 100,000+.

1) How can I tell if it is Samari vs Sidekick?
2) Is $2,500.00 too much?
3) What hidden damage do I need to look for?
4) Any other warnings advice?

Thanks!

Re: 87 Samari

Many ways to tell if its a sidekick or a sammi. Sidekick will have an ifs front suspension (coils) and a sammi will have a straight solid axle. Sammi is an 87 and sidekick wasnt out in 87. Sounds like a lot of money for a sammi like that.

Re: 87 Samari

Well this is a Hard top Samurai.

As for price it seems to be a little high to me.
Give the overall truck a good look over...If it looks wierd it probably is.

Re: 87 Samari

$2500 is kinda high.

I checked your profile in hopes of finding where you live and found not much... Filling out your profile can be a lot of help to others in the group here to answer your questions becasue Samurais and parts can be easier to find in different parts of the country. Also, some of us have spare parts and help to offer if you are close by. But I digress...

Drive this Samurai. Have a mechanic look at it. Pay special attantion to the engine as it is not the longest-lasting part of the vehicle. If it drives good and your mechanic says it's okay, then make a SERIOUS offer of $1800. Give him your address and phone number. If he doesn't bite, that is okay. That Samurai will sit there a long time. The average Joe isn't really into what a Sammy is in terms of rugged off-road transportation. The Average Joe wants a Honda CRX for $2500.

Visit him again in a couple of weeks after it has been sitting on the lot... $1800 will begin to look pretty good to him!

Ack

Re: 87 Samari

Ackerly, if it is a properly cared for street driven Sam, the engine is good for 250-350k miles, the tranny 400k. I've seen the tranny go 512k in one Zuki. I bought mine for that very reason. These 1.3's will last if the driver takes care of them. Now on hte flip side, I've been through 4 engines and 5 crankshafts, but I'm a hard ass off road. $2500 cash is about average in my neck of the woods (Dallas TX) When you can find one that is. I've seen two Samurais on used car lots in the last 2 years. I have found more MG's and MGB's than Samurais lately... now THAT is a statement about their rarity.

Re: 87 Samari

Oh, and if it is square... it's a Samurai, if it tries to have curved style lines, its a Sidekick.

Re: 87 Samari

agreed... samurais in this neck of the woods (austin texas) are hard to find... especially cheap... it kills me to hear of ya'll up in new england picking up a new one for 500 bucks, even if it is just a parts truck... its simply not fair!

and i sure wish my tranny would have lasted 400K miles... mine only has 87 on it and its about to take a crap on me... ive been looking for a new one but to no avail..................
