Lockers & Side Gears

I put a locker in the rear of my '88.5 hardtop this weekend and it went very well other than discovering frozen brake cylinder pistons on both of the rear brakes. Yesterday I started putting the other locker in my '93. Well the side gears in the '93 are made different and the locker would not fit together. Luckily I have an '88 parts rig with a rearend so I pulled the 3rd member and the side gears were in good shape.

Just to let you know, the locker with side gears is needed for the later model Zuks or you'll need to use side gears from an older model (I know these will work). I am guessing the change in the design of the rear sidegears was likely made at the time the front carriers were changed to a 2 pin type (1990), but I don't know this to be the gospel. Someone correct me on the year if you know.

Re: Lockers & Side Gears

Check my past posts on this topic. In late 1993, Suzuki changed suppliers of the gears. The change not only made the lockers not work with them, but resulted in a Technical Service Bulletin in the fall of 1994.

Re: Lockers & Side Gears

Thanks Tim, do you know if using the earlier model side gears with the locker in the '93 diff should cause any long term problems? It seems to be working ok.

Hey I finally lucked up on a JX instrument cluster with a tach to fit my square vent dash last week. I have a lead on another one if you're still looking.

Re: Lockers & Side Gears

If you ahve a viable lead on a square dash tach cluster, I'll kiss you.

As for the side gears, you can use old style, 'cept you'll have to shim it right. The '93 shims won't work.

Brand spankin' new side replacement gears are the same as the late model design. You can have the ridge machined or bench ground off and they will work too.

Re: Lockers & Side Gears

If I used the thrust washers from the older side gears does it still need to be shimmed or am I misunderstanding your point completely? I am no gearhead for sure.

I haven't called to see if they still have this cluster, but it's worth an email or tollfree call and it's in NY. It's from an 1988.5 JX just like the one I bought. Completely bolt on for my '93. Check your private messages.
