\'Kick/Sammy Dilemna

hopefully within a couple of months i might have a dilemna on my hands... its probably one of those that any one of you would be happy to take my place in...
i will probably be getting my hands on a 94 Sidekick manual tranny, 4WD with a 1.6 EFI 16 valve engine in it with only 15000 miles... its in near perfect condition...

here's my dilemna... should i just use the kick as another little 4WD (probably without modifying it because i cant afford to play with 2 4WD's), or should i be selfish and put the motor in my zook? its not like i need another car because i have my toyota as my everyday street ride, so i probably wouldnt drive the kick all that often... what else could the kick sacrifice besides the motor? i know i could use the front 3rd member (it also has 5.12's in it), but that wouldnt help me too much cause i would need another form somewhere...

its still a ways off, but i was just wondering what you guys would do if you were practically given a low milage kick to accompany your sammy...

Re: \'Kick/Sammy Dilemna

Jeez! I am having a similar dilema.. I have a '93 Tracker and as i have just found out the sammy is mine!! I can't afford 3 cars so one must go.. I think the tracker is gonna get stripped and swap all the good bits into the Sammy. 1.6L 8v, power steerin, 5.12's etc..

Are 5.12's in a sammy too low with the 4.16 tcase gears for somthing that will need to see highway time? I plan on going 31's to start and maybe 32's or 33's later.

Steve,
It should give it's life for the cause. You can use the P/S ,gears, seats and the rear view mirror. I did the swap and that's how you ended up with the ecm from my 1.3. It is a sweet swap albeit a little pricey for the harness. Let me know if you're going to do it and I'll try to help you out as much as possible.

Rob,
The 5.12's might be a little high for the 31's but they will be just right for the 33's.

Re: \'Kick/Sammy Dilemna

How tough is the swap for the EFI? Is it worth the $400 buck to buy the harness kit from trail tough or should I try to do it myself? $400 bucks is allot of elbow grease time.

Re: \'Kick/Sammy Dilemna

depends on all your likes n $$$ abilities. use the front gears in the sammy, use the complete rear diff in it too with a yota d-shaft. motor, efi, everything else will go on sammy too. but then again, i did get to drive dougO's lil tracker. those lil buggers can be fun too. weld up the rear n take off. everybody is going to tell ya different man, its up to you.

Re: \'Kick/Sammy Dilemna

A bit high is better than too low right?
The only reason I will be sticking to 31's is I have them on the Geo right now, might as well use what I got for now right. I am looking at getting the Sammy and parting out the Geo after I swap in a few choice parts into the Sammy.

Re: \'Kick/Sammy Dilemna

I have 33's and 5.12 gears with the 4.16 tcase. In my opinion, its too low for highway use. I just went on a trip that takes 2 hours of highway driving and I was tach'in over 4 grand the whole way. Usually around 4250, and this was slow enough to be passed frequently, though it was probably close to the speed limit of 65mph. This follows almost perfectly with the rpm/gearing spread sheet on ORC.

Re: \'Kick/Sammy Dilemna

Keep the Kick/tracker ;-) heck I'll give ya my rusted out 1.6 8V 5.125 gear Kick for a rust free one ;-) If I didnt have my sami alredy half done(gotta finish) I'd look for a Kick/Track to do up. BILLY BOB, dont forget the rear Kick Housing and axle shafts please, I got the 4 leaf wrangler springs for ya. I'm going to have to do another housing as I dont want to cut the perches off mine and redo it. This time I'll tack everything and bring it to a real welding shop with a good welder not my shops
