Hookin\' up the towbar?

I've never hooked up a tow bar on a Sami before. What do I need to do to make it as safe as possible? Towbars are cheap to rent but a dolly is out of the question.

I'll be pulling this with a Ford Ranger with a 3.0 and an automatic.

Is the Ranger enough truck to get me the 700 miles one way?

Re: Hookin\' up the towbar?

It depeneds, if your just going to rent a tow bar is it probably a universal tow bar that can be fit on any vehicle, and there very heavy and bulky. If your going to make a tow bar, you could mount it like mine or get some tow shackles like what i useto use. The inside of the brackets measure 2.5 just like tow shackle. There welded to my front bumper.

Re: Hookin\' up the towbar?

Tow dolly's are $39.95 a day(!) around here and that's IF you can get them to rent you one without having to rent a truck.

I'm tryin' to get my ride out there!

AARRRRG! Get off'n me back b'fore I make yee' walk de plank!

I'm tryin' to get my ride out there. It would be MORE fun if I can participate in all the stuff first hand. No offense to Billybob, I just want my own Sami there... I also want to get it in the picture which will undoubtably eventually be in one of the 4WD rags.

Re: Hookin\' up the towbar?

How about rent the tow dolly 1 way, right, ok let me finish, then when you dop it off at the location thats nearest as possible, make reservations to rent it one way back, so it'll be waiting for you. No need to pay rent on it the days your there not using it :-) Thats what I'm planning on doing. Have to make my 1 way reservation tommorrow. wanted to go with a full trailer, but its $20 more a way, plus the extra weight. My buddies truck has a 3500lb limit, and trailer would bring it way over

Re: Hookin\' up the towbar?

<font color=blue> I don't know what they are called but my friends with jeeps use them. They are the shackles that you can hook a tow bar to. That way if you have the stock bumper you have a place to mount the tow bar and it's cheaper than buying a tow dolly. By the way, good idea on returning the dolly when you get there and renting it back when you leave but there is the possibility that it won't be there when you want to go home. Reservations are great, but it still doesn't make it full proof.

Re: Hookin\' up the towbar?

Thoes shackles that you can hook a tow bar to are called Tow Shackles. Heres a pic of the ones i useto run on my truck. These are made by a friend of mine, water cut out of 1/4" thick steel. The Tow shackles are on the right, the ones on the left are for the rear.
