Engine Swaps???

Hi Guys,

I'm currently swapping out my 1.6 16valve kick motor for something a bit larger, although I don't want the weight of a V6 with a T700. Also, rotaries are a bit too expensive here in Oz.

My options at this point in time seem to be:

-22R with toy gearbox and transfercase
-Nissan SR20(injected)with nissan 5 speed and zuk transfercase
-Nissan L20?? or Z24(carbed)?? with nissan 5 speed and transfercase
-Isuzu 2.6L with Isuzu box and zuk transfercase

So what do you guys think? I've just read dparker's conversion and that sounds alright.
Give me all of your objective or completely subjective opinions?

Thanks Guys,

Zooky Matt

Re: Engine Swaps???

the 22r would be my choice out of the list but you could ues a 2wd tranny out of a celica or 2wd pickup and retain you're sammy case. .... another idea? a jeep 151 iron duke mated to an sm420 or sm465 granny gear tranny going to the zook case. i'm currently putting a 1.8 isuzu and auto 200 tranny and it don't fit worth a damn. i'd stay with a standard if u can.

87 sammy project in the works. getting chevy luv motor/ato tranny this week. lots o mods coming soon. i'll pst pics on em.

Re: Engine Swaps???

A V6 isn't all that heavy like most think! I can see the 7004R trans being a bit on the heavy side, but you can always get a lighter trans to mount up behind the V6. But, if you want to put another 4 banger in there, I'd go with the Toyota engine.

Re: Engine Swaps???

How much do these motors weigh? People stay away from v6 because they weigh so much more, i was just wondering how much more the v6 really weighs.

-Nissan SR20(injected)
-Nissan L20?? or Z24(carbed)
-Isuzu 2.6L
-jeep 151 iron duke

Re: Engine Swaps???

The SR20 is a great engine! I drive a 91 Sentra SE-R with a Japanesse spec motor. I've often contemplated dropping one of these in from a RWD car. The engine and tranny can be had for relatively cheap (under $1,000.00) but you'll need to get one from Japan as all of the US SR20s are FWD. I've also concluded that the powerband is way too off for good fourwheeling. They have a lot of torque but it's in the high end of the RPM range. If you have a heavy foot it'll keep you from bogging down in the mud, but if you get stuck then unstuck you'll shoot out like a rocket. You'll also go through clutches like mad because you'll be riding it constantly. Gearing in the T-case and axles will help but you're still talking about a high end reving.

If you stuff one of these in your car let me know how it works out. Like I said, it's a GREAT engine which has about 140hp stock. You'd certainly be able to scoot down the road.

Re: Engine Swaps???

If I was voting I would go with the "yota engine...and DEFINATELY not the 151 iron P.O.S. duke. we had a 80 Spirit with one of those and it was the biggest piece of crap anyone had ever put in a car...constantly in the garage. BTW anyone know if the 22R bolts up Nice and Smooth? and what else do yuou need if you do it, ECM etc...?

Drive fast and take chances.
