Cheap Locker

I am thinking of welding the rear end of my 88 samurai. It has a SPOA and 31's. Other than that it is stock. Any suggestions/comments, is it a good idea or what?

Re: Cheap Locker

it will eat your tires but it will kick a$$ off road. they will make some noise going around corners[tire chirping]. i find that if you put the rear tire pressure at 30 it is not so bad. i would do it again in a heart beat. pillard is supposed to weld his soon and put some gears in. just make sure you use a good dc stick machine. don't use a mig, tig is ok but slow. i just have had great luck with a dc stick machine and 7018 rod. i weld the side gears to the carrier. i welded my front and rear[don't weld the front it will not turn] sorry i didn't give more details. later mike

Re: Cheap Locker

Sounds good to me. Although I have heard that sami's stock axles are as weak as tooth picks, I am a little worried about the extra stress on them. Hell with it, thats what junk yards are for right!

Re: Cheap Locker

Just get a lockright.......it's only $189 or I think north coast has them for $175. That's a good price vs. the affects of a welded diff. Plus if you breck the weld you probably screw up the ring&pinion/carrier...maybe even the splines on the axles.
My .02 cents

Re: Cheap Locker

I have had mine welded for over a year now, i have spoa and 31's and haven't had a problem except the turning radius got a little bigger.Boy does it kicka$$ offroad though. Worth the trade off..

Re: Cheap Locker

don't worry about the axles i have had mine welded for about a year and i have only broke one axle. and it was all my fault. you wont have a rear axle problem if you drive with any common sense. i would do it over a lockrite any day. you can use the lockrite up front and kicka$$ with it locked front and rear. so there is another 2 cents worth. later mike

Re: Cheap Locker

Mike, can you elaborate as to how the axle break was 'your fault'? I was planning on locking mine with a few weld spots this weekend or next, and I like to be completely informed.

Re: Cheap Locker

I have seen welded diffs come apart and if you are deep in a trail it is no fun gettin it home.... I wouldn't weld them unless you plan on carrying a spare diff with you.
For the price of a locker you get a big piece of mind as well.
