Need dash electrical info on \'88.5

I am trying to get my Dodge Raider gauges installed, but need a little help.

I have the Haynes manual, which sucks, but it's better than reading tea leaves, so it'll have to do for now. I am trying to hook up the oil pressure gauge and the volt meter to the Zuk, right now there are idiot lights. Both gauges are two wire setups.

My thought is to remove the speedo assembly and tap into the wires there, if they test correctly with my multitester. How do you get them out? Anyone installed the Raider gauges before? I am also guessing on the wire colors on the back, so it'll be a miracle if they work, but having done *some* electrical work in the past, I'm hopeful.

When I'm done I'm going to do a writeup, and will make sure you get full credit, I'm one for giving credit where it's due.

In this wiring picture, the voltage is on the left and the oil pressure on the right.

You'll need an oil pressure sending unit for the oil pressure guage to work. The zuk doesn't have a true sending unit, just a pressure switch to turn on the idiot light.

Re: Need dash electrical info on \'88.5

I did not not know that the Sami oil sender was like that! I'm gonna look for a true replacement sender.

I can also tell you JEEPN that the 88.5 dash hookup looks nothing like the 88 JX and standard dash (and most likely earier models too!). So the '88 shop manual won't be of much help in tracing the dash wiring.

You can bypass the dash completely and connect directly to the senders on the block as the Electronic Control Module (ECM) sensors are separate.

The oil sender is above and to the right of the oil filter. The Temp. sender is just below the thermostat on the front end of the intake manifold. It is not to be confused with the double-wired unit in the same area which connects to the ECM.

Good luck,

Acker

Re: Need dash electrical info on \'88.5

The 88.5 uses a color scheme that "...MAY OR MAY NOT..." be the same as the colors listed in the Haynes and Chilton guides. I found this out the hard way. Only about 60% of the wirings are etched in stone, the rest had no set color code. What's green with white stripe on mine maybe white with yellow on yours. I had a hell of a time swapping the instrument cluster between my parting JX and my 88.5.

You are the man, they are exactly where you mentioned, and it should take me about 1/2 hour to wire everything in. I appreciate it.

I noticed the Haynes manual lists "Samurai" and doesn't even differentiate between years, which is why I was skeptical.

I'll have the gauges in today, with new radio, then on to the rest of the list.

Put new shims in the area axle to correct the driveline problem
Reattach the rear driveshaft
Mount the gauges
Hook up the gauges
Install the radio
Install the CB
Install the CB antenna
Remove windshield fixed hinges and lights, get ready to mail out.
Mount new Swampers
Weld rim back together
Remove rear seat
Mount air tanks
Install York
Make rear tow mounts
Make winch mounting plate and roller fairlead
Mount winch
Make bikini top
Mount storage boxes
Install roll cage
Mount lights
Install body lift
Make mounts for tow bar
make lights for tow bar

Yeah, I think that's about it. I should have 1/2 of the list done today.

Re: Need dash electrical info on \'88.5

I hooked up the oil pressure gauge and it works fine, but when it's hooked up, the oil idiot light stays on. Will this hurt the ECM? I was just going to put a piece of tape over the light. The gauge seems to be accurate and works well.
