cj springs perch holes
 

i'm installing cj springs this weekend and wondered if i drill new holes for the perch centering bolt if it would weaken the springs in the long run

I don't think an inch on a light truck such as the Samurai would hurt much...but thats me.

IF YA DRILL THE PERCHES, YOUR U-BOLTS SIT CROOKED. I ALWAYS DRILL THE SPRINGS. THEY ARE HARD TO DRILL BUT IT JUST WORKS BETTER. DO NOT USE DRILLING OIL ON THE SPRINGS AS IT WILL HARDEN THE METAL AND YOUR FINISHED. JUST KEEP YOUR BITS SHARP AND USE COLD WATER TO LUBE. IF MEMORY SERVES ME, I DRILLED MINE 1 1/4 INCH FORWARD TO MAKE EM WORK. DON'T GET IN A HURRY. MY 2 CENTS

Well drill both the perch AND the u-bolt plate. Very simple no alignment problems.

I'm not advocating drilling the springs, I think it weakens them.

But, to drill the springs easier, use a masonry bit, they're designed to be abused. They'll drill a LOT easier than a standard bit, just take them slow and use pressure.
