Gears

O.K. Where I live The rednecks dont know/ dont think that you really need to Gear right. So is gearing really that big a deal?? does it really give you a phenomenal advantage??

As a certified rdneck you have my blessing in regearing yur rig. The diffrence is in whether you have to run hard at an obstacle or just crawl over it. They say the difference between a streaker and a strutter is "confidence". I can honestly say that the 4.16 gears in my transfer case was the most enjoyable modification I've done. The next would be a locked rear.

hey man, as is papa, im also a certified rednek man. as papa said, do you want to bounce over it or crawl/drive over it. i got tired of bouncing so i got me a grsII (used ill add). but it is sweeeeeet. papa hit it on the head man. lower gears are sweeet. used to run 5:12 axle, stock t/c and 33s. was ok locally, but go to anywhere where there is any sort of challenge, i was geared too high. needed a better low. got it. love it.

Low gears also do wonders for the life of your clutch.

Thanx guys I am worried about it locally and off-road! Does it give you much acceleration?? Like if I was to run
some5.89's with 35's or 5.12's with 33's how would these do both locally and off-road.com

it all depends on what your wheeling on man. i went all over livingston KY and parts of tellico with 33s, 5:12s and stock t/c. lav25, james H., csr, oilburner and a few more can tell ya how my trap did when set up like that. it was good for most of the things i did, had to bonziii it sometimes, but i still made it. i have since gotten a grsII and 4:62 axle gears. got a even sweeter low range, and i can still cruze at 80 in the big road.

If you're looking to run 33" tires on the highway, your closest fit to stock gearing is the 4.57s. 5.38s are more suited to 35" tires. Avoid anything higher than that, they just get too small and too weak. A combination of tcase and axle gears is the the ultimate way to go though....

Just wanted to add that most replies you'll get will refer to the 'crawler gears' that are available, meaning the extra-low low gears in 4x4. These are great for crawling over stuff, but I believe you are wanting to know about re-gearing just to compensate for larger tires. In your neck of the woods, I'm sure you hit the mud - you can get Too Low for mud with the crawler gear set, but regearing for the larger tires is THE way to go for street use and to save that clutch in the mud.

Glen is correct on gearing/tire size. I have 5.38's with 33's and that seems to be a bit too low - especially when I go on the highway. I'm screaming by the time I hit 70mph. 4.56-5.12 would be perfect for 32-33" tires. However, I do love the lower gears on the trail. A much noticeable difference!

Well I dont have the money to do all the t/case stuff!! To tell the truth I didnt want to run5.89's with 35's cause of the price of thos eR&P's (250 a pop!) I have decided to go with the sidekidk gears and some 33's, if I start traveling and finding some rocks then I will up grade my t/case! Thanx a lot for all the help!
