Shocks/Shock Towers ?? (Again)

I am at a x-roads and am a little unsure about what to do. I posted a question about my shocks about a week ago (need longer ones for a 2" RS lift) and am trying to decide what the best thing to do would be. I read on the BBS about switch to the Ford shock towers. Is there a major advantage associated with this?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Yeah I needed to get you this. You've got the 2" S/R right?

Front shock NAPA# 33097

I need to get the # off the rears (they are on my trailer). I will REALLY get them tonite.

Zukinator,
Major advantage=You'll be able to get the most travel out of
your springs with longer shocks and shock towers. I've seen the
ford shock tower setup on a zuki, it seems real nice. I ended
up building my own out of some scarp metal. Works for now.

Where are you guys getting the towers? I have the part #. Today I went to AutoZone and Carquest with no luck. The Pepboys and NAPA stores near me both just went out of business. Do I have to go to a dealership or what?

Yes,it's a dealer part.Petroworks also carry them.

I DID IT!

Rear shock NAPA Part #31000

As for the longer shock mounts, you won't need them until you go with a longer or "arched" spring. If you decide to go the extra 3" of the combo, give me a hollar. I can explain what I did to allow longer shocks and shorter bumpstops.

Yankee Tim-- Thanks for the NAPA #, picked up a set today for my '92 that has a sr. Is there a NAPA shock that will work for the 5" kit??? I'm runnning 3" Nationals and a sr on my other Zuk. Thanks again.

Thanks guys. Calmini gave me those numbers back when I bought my 2", so the least I could do was pass it along.

If you are running the full 5" combo, you can install the Ford towers up front like I did. Accepts a 28.5-29.5" shock using the 2" bumpstops that came with the 2" kit.

In the rear, I run eXpander shackles with a long-travel upper shock mount. Accepts 28.5-29.5" shock using 2" bumpstops.

It is important to use the bumpstops as they stop the spring right when it completely flattens but does not let the spring go into a negative arch. That's bad for an arched spring. You get the full 3" of travel in the spring itslef that way.

You could net larger gains of front suspension travel by modifying the spring perch mounts and making a longer trailing shackle in the front.

All in all, it nets a good deal more flex from the system, but it stops being "bolt-on". Calmini designed the kit for the average guy who has access to hand tools and wants to make it trail worthy. And in that respect, it does that very well IMHO. The world needs such a kit and that's why it is so successful.

But if you start out on this kit and you don't mind going the little extra to trick the set-up, it make a big difference. You just have to have access to the tools to do the job.
