one more time: mobile-winch & air-tank bumper

folks,

i will post 2 mor piccies of my planned bumper set-up

the cyan area would be a 3x3" square tube, the yellow area where the mobile-winchplate would actually mount...

I still need some input on the air-tank function of the front bumper...

may i pick your brains?

Alfred, Are you planning to use the stock bumper as a basis for this? The stocker is so weak. Jim

no, the front one will have to go... however, i do plan to keep the light-panels of the rear one...(the centerpart where the winchplate mounts will also be 3x3" square tube)

Re: one more time: mobile-winch & air-tank bumper

Alfred,
Given good welds, the bumper ought to hold a lot more pressure that the other limitations which will be the pressure rating of the compressor system used to fill it, or your hose used to transfer air to the tires.

Assuming my calcs and approximations are close….putting 90 psi in the 540 cu.in. bumper will air a flat 30x8 tire (about 4200 cu.in.) up to about 10 psi. For comparison, a 12 in dia.x 24 inch long tank (about 2700 cu.in.) with 90 psi, will take that tire up to 35 psi.

Airing up four 30x8 tires from 6 psi, using 90 psi in the bumper will leave about 9 psi in the tires. Using the 12x24 tank with 90 psi will leave about 18 psi in the tires.

That will give you some food for thought. Let me know if you want some other calcs. Hahnderosa.

Re: one more time: mobile-winch & air-tank bumper

Hahnderosa,

thanks for the math....

some other people (on the swb and Toy SUV board) came up w/ similar numbers... so i am calling it off...

i was also advised, that it is dangerous to pressurize it above this values...

Anybody interested in airtanks, pls check the SWB forum and do a search for air-tanks.

In a nutshell
Good ideas there were:
-scubadiving tank (are pressure-rated 3000 lb.)
-fire extinguisher
-soda tank (type: CocaCola)

Bad ideas:
-bumpers
-roll-cages (moisture that will "rust" your cage from within)
-pvc-pipes (explode)

thanks again, good lesson learned!
