How much TRANSFER play is too much?

As some of you know, I've been messing around with my transfer case shifter. http://www.zekes.com/~sjames/TransferShifter1.jpg

While I'm in the general area, like looking down the access hole for the shifter. How much "slop" should be in the transfer case drive train? In other words, how much should the Input Shaft rotate from the power side to the compression side? 1/4 turn, 1/2 turn or what?

Is the transfer case in my Sami a gear drive or a chain drive? Is there a manual available for the transfer case and/or the transmission? I only have a Haynes manual and it doesn't say much about the drive train. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Re: How much TRANSFER play is too much?

if its a Samurai I its gear driven, if its a samurai II (post '95) its chain driven (less desirable, you cant swap 4,16 gears in there)

hope this helps,
Alfred

Re: How much TRANSFER play is too much?

OK Alfred. It's an ‘86 so I guess it's gear driven. That's good news and bad news, right? I can make upgrades but, the slop I was thinking to be in the chain, ain't? Humph!?!?

Well, time to get a cool one and see what else gets posted for me, eh?
Thanks, I love this BB stuff. It's like picking someone's brain without the long distance drive.

Re: How much TRANSFER play is too much?

There is probably about a 1/4 turn of play in a stock Tcase. Perfectly normal (dependent upon which range your in and if you are in gear in the Transmission too). If you do decide to move up to a better ratio Transfercase, we care a full line of gear sets (The GRS1 and 2)and OEM parts for your 4wheeling needs.
