Is .040 oil clearance too much?

Hi, new to the board so I thought I start things out with a wild question. Just got an ‘86 Hard Top that has been rode hard and put away wet too many times. Towed it home and got the engine to start but sounded like a 50 caliber. Pulled the motor and removed the major parts. Seems that the no. 1,2 & 3 rods are loose. No. 1 seems the worse. I can move the piston and rod up and down .040 of an inch.

Is that too much oil clearance? Maybe some STP would help, eh?

Well If you arn't joking, then yes that is too much. Sounds like time for a rebuild or find an engine...

Just find yourself 4 leather shoe tounges, and slide them in where the bearings should be. JUST KIDDING

Here's a Pic of the no. 1 & 2 rod bearings. I removed them tonight. The crank is shot without saying. Removed the camshaft as well. Could see any play in the shaft to head fit but have to wonder. The camshaft bosses in the head don't look too bad but, how do you tell if things are out of limits?

Bob, it looks like your engine is smoked. You need to do a complete rebuild or find a good used one.
