Help... Stubborn Third Member

1988 Samurai
I tackled my pinion bearing problem last night. I took the axles out removed the drive sharft and got to the third member. The third member was not sealed with a gasket as it was suppose to but rather with liquid gasket. The liquid gasket from what I can figure is acting like a seal/glue. I tried tapping it out but it won't budge. I when so far at to try to rid a slide hammer to it but that didn't work.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get it off? I am so close!!!

Re: Help... Stubborn Third Member

you are almost there , the third member does'nt have a g
asket they come from the factory with silicone gaulk(RTV). once the bolts are removed take a sharp screwdriver or chisle and place it in the seam between the case and third member. rap it with a hammer a couple of time to seperate the two you may have to work your way around the casing. you will reseal it again for assembly with more RTV good luck

were not here for a long time were here for a good time

Re: Help... Stubborn Third Member

rui had the best idea. I build transmissions and 3rd members for a living, I never wedge housing apart with chisels or screwdrivers. I used a 5lb shop hammer to knock my sammi 3rd member loose but I like Rui's suggestion better. Maybe, put a bind on it with a jack then hit it with a hammer.
