Front 3rd member

Does anyone know if a 88.5 sammy has a 4 pin carrier or a 2 pin carrier in the front???

Rick,

It's a 50/50 chance what you'll find in there. Mine had the 2-pin carrier. No way to know without looking, I'm afraid.

along this same line i've got a chance to buy a locker from a friend of mine thats in his front diff. he says he'll sell it to me for $100.00 if we exchange 3rd members what am i looking at to put it in the rear of mine???? do i need to change side gears??? can i do that without tearing the 3rd member completely apart HELP!!!!!

OK - this is doable. It will sound intimidating, but between the two of you it can be done. Here's the short version:
1. Remove his front chunk, and your rear chunk.
2. Take care to get a "feel" for the clearance between the pinion gear & the ring gear. Or you can buy gear marking compound & let it squish between the gears & you can see the pattern.
3. Take the diff. apart & swap the side gears between the two chunks.
4. Reassemble.
