Steering box play

My steering has too much slop in it and I've tracked it down to the steering box. The gear box has a screw on top with a nut around it. Is this the undocumented (Hayes) steering adjustment?
Which way do I turn it and how much?

Thanks,
Shawn

Re: Steering box play

You'll need to loosen and then hold the nut with an 14 mm open end wrench and turn the screw in very small increments clockwise. Then test drive and adjust again if necessary until you get it where it doesn't have slack in the wheel (or as much), but also still turns easily. If it begins to start getting hard to turn, it's been tightened to much. Also before you tighten it back down for good be sure that the wheels still turn all the way to both right and left. If it's really bad there's only so much that can be adjusted out, but it should improve it considerably.
