shifter or tranny?

Here is my problem. I have a 1987 Samurai and I'm having problems with the shifter. Here's what happens. I'll be going down the road and it will shift fine then I'll go to downshift and it doesn't go the whole way to the left and if I play with it it'll eventually go in to second...would this be the Shift pin bolt thing? Or is this a bigger problem. Also is it safe to continue driving it in this condition or will I do more damage. Well I'm not sure if anyone can help me or not...but anything is helpful...so let me know. Thanks mike

Re: shifter or tranny?

If your tranny doesn't grind or slip, then it could just be the sloppy shifter. I couldn't get mine into 5th gear and reverse was kinda a hit-or-miss thing. When I replaced the guide bolt (easy job), everything worked just fine and I can now hit all gears. Just be sure to lube everything up good when you're in there. Replacing the bolt is a cheap and easy try at the solution. If that ain't it, you haven't lost much, if it is it, you've saved yourself big buck from the transmission shop!
