poor mpg

im sure that this subject has been beat to death but i need help. i have a stock 88 with only 23,000 original miles. i just got a different carb from figmo and all was well, so i thought. i drove it 135 miles(highway) and was at half a tank, then it sat overnight and the rest of the driving was city. the tank was empty at 195 miles. what gives??? i've been looking at all the lists and really cant find an answer.is it the o2?? i did the check with the switch and the check engine light blinked(like it should) once, then i retested it and it blinked 3 times. i then proceeded to disconnect the o2 and did the test-it did not blink(like its supposed to??) i also noticed alot of sooty residue in the tail pipe(too rich???) someone posted something about the fifth switch possibly being bad. with so little miles on this thing i would expect better milage. i want to put a lift on but if i cant get decent milage now i dont want to risk it being worse later.
sorry so long but i needed to vent

any help or testing procedures would be great

i have the chiltons manual but its not much of a help in diagnosing problems

derek

Re: poor mpg

Have you checked the spark plugs, timing and disty cap and rotor? Maybe the vacuum advance on the disty is bad. Valve adjustment? Water temp switch or egr valve? Hole in the gas tank(just kidding)? FWIW with 31's my Zuk gets about 200 miles a tank. I'm not sure about the 5th gear switch, but you can test it.

Re: poor mpg

well you are still getting 19.5 mpg, Check your fuel filter, I run two just becuase the stock carbs are so sensitive.
I would also check your airfilter, check that your EGR moves properly. These things tend to run on the rich side
evan when working good.
