Towing 87 Samurai

I am looking for advice on towing my 87 Sami from Texas to South Dakota. Can anyone tell me the purpose of putting the transmission in 2nd gear opposed to neutral? I am afraid of messing something up by pulling it that far in 2nd gear. I know that is what the manual says, but I just do not understand it. Can one of you Sami regulars give me some advice?

Re: Towing 87 Samurai

I believe the reason is to throw some lubrication around while in transit. I have towed my Samurai from Indiana to Maine to Minnesota to Arizona and then to Northern California. No problems when I was towing (altough some when my wife towed). Make sure the steering colum is unlocked and start the engine every 200 miles. By the way, I am a South Dakota native. I left the Sisseton Wahpeton Lakota Reservation when I was 18 and never looked back.

Re: Towing 87 Samurai

i would just disconnect the rear drive shaft and make sure the hubs are unlocked. this for sure won't cause a problem and you don't have to stop and start the motor every 200 miles.

Re: Towing 87 Samurai

im pretty sure you put the transmission in second to keep it from turning... since the tcase is in neutral, the wheels will turn freely, but so will the tcase... if the tranny was in neutral, then it might start to turn due to the centrifigul force put out by the tcase... does that make sence?

Re: Towing 87 Samurai

yeah but so what? it would only turn so slow. Oh well. I put the t-case in 2wd, and tranny in nutreal, it works great. I use towing shackles.
