posting this Q for a friend

My friend drives a stock samurai with only extended shackles. He'd like to hear from you guys if he could fit a 225-70-15
tires in the stock rims. His idea is to get wide stance while not going too tall.

I told him he could fit it but he wanted another opinion as the local tire shops over here discouraged him to fit such tires on stock rims. the tire shops said that to fit anything bigger than a 215-75-15, he needs a broader rim like the 15x7.

Let my friend read for himself. He does not believe me even when I'm running a bigger tire (235/75) than what he wants on his rig, a 225/70.

thanks guys...

Re: posting this Q for a friend

For a time, I ran 31 x 10.50 x 15 tires on stock rims-- while this is not the optimum combination, it worked fine until I could get some wider rims. (Handling was worse than with the 205's, of course)

Yes, they will fit. The 225 is not a large jump, it's just one size up from his present tire.

Let's look at some numbers...

The 215/75/15 tire is:
8.46" wide at the section width
6.35" tall at the section height
27.7" tall overall

The 225/70/15 tires is:
8.86" wide at the section width (0.4" wider overall or 0.2" per side or 1/5")
6.20" tall at the section height
27.4" tall overall, which is 0.3" shorter than the present tire

A little wider, yes, but not by a whole lot. They'll fit without any problems.

By comparison a 235/75/15 tire is:
9.25" wide at the section width
6.94" tall at the section height
28.88" tall overall
