16V timing mark questions

Hey there fellow zukers,
I have been rebuilding the 1.6 16V motor in my Sammy, and I have it all together and I am trying to set the valve lash on it. But something just does not seem right to me while trying to do this.
A little history first, the cam is keyed with the cam sprocket pin is next to the E mark so I used the E timing mark to set up top dead center. So now while trying to set the valve lash the 1,2,5,7 (Haynes, Chiltons) method, I noticed that some of the rockers are riding on the sides of the lobes but not the tips. Is it ok to set the lash like that? When I have worked on Hondas and fords we usually set each cylinder at top dead center and adjust the lash. So what should I expect while setting the lash and am I using the correct timing marks. Thanks
