Really loud squeal

A few weeks ago I noticed that my belts on my '93 Tracker were a little dry-rotted, so I replaced them with new ones from NAPA. After about 200 miles of mostly highway driving (all in one day), a squealing problem developed. The squealing begins as soon as I start the engine and lasts for about a minute. The squealing does not return until the next time I have to start the engine. I tried tightening the belts, but the problem did not go away (there might have been a small improvement, though). Sound familiar? If so, what do you think is going on?

Re: Really loud squeal

Your alternator belt is not quite tight enough. After you start it, a very high load is placed on the alternator to recover from the starting.

Thanks. You are correct. I tightened the belt a little more and the problem is gone.
