Breaking rear axle shafts TOYOTA

This is on a 85 TOYOTA TRUCK not a samurai

One of my 4wheeling buds is having a bad time with rear axles shafts. He has owned the truck for 4 years with no trouble at all from it.Now this.

His truck is an 85 Toy Extra cab 4x4(Daily Driver)
4:11 gears
open front
Lock Rite rear (Been in there for 6 years)
In the last 7 months he has broke 3 rear axles all RIGHT BEHIND THE BEARING! No twisted spines on none of the axle shafts. Is this normal for them to break there?

This is south Louisiana just blacktop(hwy) and mud. This truck does no trail riding. Just plays in the mud around the leeve.

Thanks for any hints to why this is happing. Albert

Re: Breaking rear axle shafts TOYOTA

Sounds like something is wrong with the housing. Are the broken axles always on the same side? How are the bearings. You mentioned mud... that is a killer on bearings. Also, what size tires are on it?

I don't claim to know much but basing this only on what you have said I'd say the bearings are shot, the housing is bent, and the axle is being heated to the point (from driving fully locked on the street with bigger offroad tires) that the axles get stressed and when on side stopped because of the locker (which may be broken) $%&* kapow &*#[email protected] inside axle breaks.

Having a second thought and noticing you said the splines are okay, I'm not sure if it is bent. Got pics of the breaks? That would help diagnose.

Re: Breaking rear axle shafts TOYOTA

o.k..... stock engine, stock gears he is running 36 " Q Buckshots. Spoke to him at lunch time all the axles are from used rear axles .

1st break driver side, 2nd break passenger side, 3rd break passenger side
We are going to try and pull it apart this weekend to see if the locker is broken or not when we replace the axle shaft. He replaced the bearings every time on the (new) (used) axles .

Re: Breaking rear axle shafts TOYOTA

I have a buddy in my club that has broken 1 rear in the last year. It broke in the same place, but he runs 35's,locked, 4.88's and dual cases in his 88 4runner. JC
