Chasing noises

Went out wheeling today with some Zuks. A friend got high centered on a (large) gravel pile. I got out if front of him and hooked up with tow straps. Trying to pull him out, it was lifting my back end up and smoking my clutch so we tried another angle.

Afterwards, while in 4x4 low and high) on gravel roads, when I let off the throttle, there was a noise similar to the sound of sliding in gravel but it wan't coming from the ground. I could feel a corresponding vibration in the t-case shifter. I took it out of 4x and the noise went away. Now I have to figure out where it is coming from.

It could be in the front axle, the driveshaft, or the t-case. I'm sure it was caused by pulling my friend out.

Any similar experiences to shorten my search?

TIA
