I am installing the locked 3rd member I bought this summer. I have pulled the axles and changed out the diff, but now I can't get the axles back in. I skipped a step in removal, I did not pull the steering knuckles. Will I have to pull them to get the axles in? Or am I just doing something else wrong? Thanks, JC
I think the inner axle is on the low side to the spider gears (female splines) ...You need to tilt the inner axle shaft upward to hit the spider gears as you push the shaft in place.
I've never had any luck neither when pulling the front seems I always had to dissassemble the knuckle to get enough room to tilt the axle shaft. Just a bump so somelse can let us in on the trick it takes to do this.
It is not necessary to disassemble the knuckle to replace the 3rd member. As mentioned, the axle stub must be lined up at the right angle for the splined end to fit into the side gears. The birfield fits real snug, but it will fit into the knuckle.
