I WANT A CD PLAYER!!!

I am going to be going on a long trip to see my family for X-mas and me and my boy want to jam on the way. My tape player eats tapes for a regular diet and I want an upgrade. Unfortunately I realize that I drive the equivilent to a cement mixer. I am still SPUA with a small shackle lift, and the ride is OK at best. I have two 105W speakers in the front and two 60W speakers in the targa at present. Who has a SUCESSFUL CD installation, and what were the specs of said setup? I've looked for a skip time of three days, but they don't exist! Remember also that I drive a Zuki, so I'm a very thrifty person (read cheap) . Who has knowledge of the specifications that I seek? Thank you in advance for any replies...

Re: I WANT A CD PLAYER!!!

Believe it or not , I just bought a cheap $115 Pioneer and stuffed it in the dash with some amazing results . It's nothing really fancy and doesn't have much of an equalizer but works very well and has yet to skip . So far it's done much better than the last expensive Sony I had ....

Re: I WANT A CD PLAYER!!!

I think a cheapie CD player is the best bet. I have had expensive head-units that skipped more than my $125 sale Clarion in my 6.6 ton work truck. I think they make them hardier but without less options.

Re: I WANT A CD PLAYER!!!

I agree with you guys. I have had probably ten cd players (alot to be 23 and pioneers (although I prefer blaupunkt) offer the best skip protection dollar for dollar. blaupunkts are good also but that's my .02
Good luck. I am currently troubleshooting my 1/2 dead stereo too.-------B/C I FINALLY GOT MY SAMURAI TO RUN!!

Re: I WANT A CD PLAYER!!!

I agree. Just get a cheapo Cd player and throw it in the dash. I got a Jensen a couple years ago for about $80 somewhere that has worked perfectly in my Sami ever since. There's no real secret to a successful installation, just hook the wires up right.

One thing though, just for clarity. Speakers don't have watts, amplifiers have watts. Buying speakers rated for more power handling don't make your system louder unless you get a more powerful amplifier to push them. The rated power of most aftermarket head units is sometimes rated as high as 50W x 4, (50 Watts times 4 channels) but head unit amps are notoriously poor, even in better quality head units. It is more likely that the high quality ones are putting out about 20 Watts RMS and a cheaper unit is probably more like 5 or 7 watts. So your 105W and 60W speakers (which are most likely Peak wattage ratings, not RMS or continuous power) will be fine. They are probably rated for 40W and 25W continuous (RMS) power and will handle what any head unit puts out without much trouble.

If you have the choice, get a head unit, even a cheap one, with an RCA preamp output. That way in the future, if you have a few extra bucks, you can get a small 4 channel amp to power your speakers for better sound. Even a 25x 4 or 30 x 4 amp of good quality will help the sound quite a bit over the horrible amps found in most head units. If you shop carefully you might be able to get one with a built in crossover that allows bridging of a pair of the channels for 75 or 100 watts to be fed to a small subwoofer (send the remaining 2 channels to the front speakers). Don't poopoo that idea..a little bit of sub support does wonders fo the sound of any system.

Like most other samurai stuff, some frugal shopping and careful parts picking can yeild good results for not too much money.

Re: I WANT A CD PLAYER!!!

I installed mine inside an old army ammo box and then put it inside the glove box. Works awesome and it basically keeps sticky fingers and mud off the stereo. My last cd player I flung mud in the cd slot and now it no worky. I have a pioneer cd player and it has never skipped on me yet.
