Geo tracker help needed please!

hey I own a Fullsize Bronco, and have a Geo Tracker as a spare vehicle/vehicle for a cheap ride around town when gas prices are so damned high like they are

well, the geo tracker quit on me a while back-92-1.6-5spd

i was driving down the street..40 mph, in 4th gear, and it just died, no noise..just died

if it matters it got rained on the night before w/ the top off

i drained it out and dried it as good as possible

i checked every fuse in the dash, all are good

i replaced the spark plugs, needed to be done anyways, no difference

heres what it does: when it tries to turn over it just shakes the whole engine violently, puts out exhaust..but doesnt seem to want to idle?

i figured id post in here with people that know the engines and cars the best

thanks for the help in advance,
Joseph

I am assuming you have a '92 1.6 liter with a five speed transmission...

It runs like not all the cylinders are firing?

If so, check the distributor cap and the rotor for wear or damage. Possibly a bit of water broke loose in the cap and was vaporized causing sudden damage to the cap...

That is my educated guess..

Ack

Re: Geo tracker help needed please!

I would take an old plug plug it into one of the wires and crank it over see if you have spark. another thing to check if you have spark loosen the bleeder on the feul filter. turn the key on see if feul leaks out, or at least listen for the pump to run when the key is first turned on. you should also be able to hear the relay kick on and off under the dash.

Re: Geo tracker help needed please!

Have you just tried to check the timing to see if everything is aligned? #1 plug on Top Dead Center with both valves closed and the rotor under the distributer cap pointing at the spark plug connector?

I'd try that first just to see if the engine is stil timed between the can and crank. You could have sheared a crank or cam key or had the timing belt jump. Lots of things to look at.

"""took the cap off and looked..a lil bit messy but nothing bad"""

Messy? It has to be clean and dry in there. Otherwise the spark just jumps to ground. Sounds like that's where you need to start.

Re: Geo tracker help needed please!

by a "little bit messy" i meant taht there was a lil bit of corrosion stuff..like off your battery, arou the terminals..so i cleaned it off?

it didnt make any noise going down the road..just stopped..didnt vibrate..didnt do anything..i dont see how that works?
