sami u bolt size

OK..my head's going to explode.

This past weekend I started swapping over a front axle I have with a locker already installed and knuckle over steering. Pretty straightforward, right? Yep. No problems with the general concept and execution except I can't find fargin U bolts to fit it to save my life!!! For starters, I have conflicting info on what size(s) they are. Can someone please give me a definitive answer to this questioN?

To make matters more confusing, all the Autozone stores in my area recently got ordered to send back all their in-stock Ubolts to central distribution, did so, then got an email saying "never mind." The counter goons say they will be back in stock thursday or maybe the thursday after that. NAPA has none in stock, they have to order them. Advance auto has about 3 on the shelves, none the right size, though apprently I don't know the right size, anyways.

I finally got a couple of them in a kit at a Pep boys about 20 miles away. sort of universal fit, but within the parameters of my application. I try to put one through the drivers side front spring plate (this is with YJs SPUA) and because it's too wide the threads get mangled when I persuade it through. I sawzall off the mangled threads and when I get to where it's about to get tight, the ubolts run out of thread all together. They are too long.

I have a pair of larger ubolts on the other side snugged but I think when I go to tighten them up they will run out of thread, too.

So what are the correct dimensions for the front Ubolts on a samurai? They seem to be 1/2" bolts as long as I can fit them through the spring plate without trouble. The passenger side is what? 3"? Whats the drivers side? 2.5"? And how long do I have to get them so the thread doesnt run out before they are tightened? 7"? 8'?

I have one warehouse place to check today and if they dont have them I am going to order the exact correct size. I wasted most of a weekend running around trying to find the damn things and then the rest of the weekend trying to get them in , only to find they were wrong. thanks anyone.

Re: sami u bolt size

daxe, Contact NCO. He will help. That is where I got the bolts for my spring conversion. And you are right that the fronts are 2 different sizes. I asked this question a while back. I'll try to find the answer. Jim

thanks jim,

This covers three of the four corners. Whats the third one? 3"x1/2"x6", right? or is it 3 1/8 x 1/2 x 6?

Part of whats so frustrating about this was that the last time I needed a set of ubolts to put on the YJs I jsut bought them all at autozone, no problems. WTF is with their central office just deciding to pull all the ubolts off the shelves at all the stores. And why did they have to pick LAST WEEK to do that?

I'll check Plumb Auto today. (closed on the weekends)
