91 tracker surge

I have aquired Ranger Rick's old blue 91 tracker. It is now in the works for the wife's daily/ off roader. It now has 2" body lift, 30"a/t's, header, and custom front and rear bumpers. Oh I almost forgot, its got a paint scheme to match my sammy too. Hopefully in a short while it will be on 33's. and I will have 5.13's back in it that I aquired $right$ yesterday. Anyway, when its cold at first startup, it revs fine. Shortly after it begins surging. 500rpm to about 1500rpm. After it warms up, it idles fine. Any clues? It also did this before the header install.

Re: 91 tracker surge

I think the popular opinion is that it involves the thermo wax plug that controls idle speed until it warms up. You can take off the little cover on the front of the TB (three screws) and back out the thing inside, then stick a piece of hose inside there to block the opening and which sticks out far enough to seal against the cover. This kills off that circuit and eliminates the surging. Or so I have heard. I guess an alternative would be to replace the thermo wax plug, too.

Re: 91 tracker surge

Great info. I now have no surge, 800rpm idle not 1500rpm.And at 60mph, I am pulling 400 less rpm than before. Not only did that fix the surge but also got me better mileage and an easier running motor. Thank you. ORC Board just paid off.

Re: 91 tracker surge

glad I could help ya out, Grump. Credit for that fix goes to Tomkat's mod of AKDale's fix for this problem. AKDale uses a hose with a bolt in it, Tomkat went with using the hose to seal against the cover. I just passed it along.
