Anyone running open air intake systems

Hey guys I just swapped out my stock closed air box for an open air filter type. I have a 91 EFI sammy. On the old box lid there is a tube that connects it. This tube also sucks air in what is it for. I also got a Breather filter. But I have no clue where the heck that goes. If anyone has there open air filter shots they can post or direct me to some on the internet I'd be happy thanks guys.

Re: Anyone running open air intake systems

I don't have a picture handy but my zuk is EFI and the picture zuk88 posted looks just like what I have.

Except I used a peice of 3" exhaust pipe from a muffler shop and had them crush one end down to fit inside the factory rubber intake, and on the other end hooks it to the K/N air filter ??? Not to confuse you but that's how I hooked it up. Will try to get a picture when i get home from work.

Re: Anyone running open air intake systems

Zuku, the tube is connected to the top of the cam cover and the PCV valve. The breather filter you got would probably plug in where the tube goes into the cam cover and you'd have to block off the PCV valve. I have a similar setup to the pic above and have a question for someone more knowledgeable than myself....why does the tube split with part going to the PCV valve and the other going into the airbox? Also I notice that inside the airbox the inlet to the tube is necked way down to a little hole...seems it would be limiting the volume of topend fumes into the intake. Would having an opening full tube size into the intake have a bad effect on something?

Re: Anyone running open air intake systems

Mine doesn't go directly to the top of the engine. Mine goes to some sort of censor. then the air travels up then out to another tube. I really need to get a digital camera to take pics when I have questions like this.
Actually looking at the picture again the white device above the thermosat housing looks like the place my hose goes to. When I get off work tonight I'll look again. just to make sure. Thanks guys. and please post more pics if you have any.

Re: Anyone running open air intake systems

The hose that went to the factory air filter now goes to the tube that has the K/N on it.All these pictures were taken at night so I know the quality is not good.

For some reason once I hooked up the small hose(that sucks air) to the tube it has a LOUD gurgling(sp?) sound at Idle only. Why I have never been able to answer.........Hope the pictures help.

Re: Anyone running open air intake systems

I have something similar to one posted above. it uses the stock airbowl which has been, uhh, customized with a hammer to sit down over the Pony carb. The stock rubber thing then leads to a short section of 3" exhaust pipe and then into a $20 cone type air filter.

It makes more noise but I dont know if it did anything to make more power. I know it made lots more room under my hood for useful stuff like a winch control box.

picture is with the previous body on the truck. the air cleaner is still there with the new body.
