Can\'t make Zukin..buying a house..come in and read

Well, a time as come to put on my big boy pants and move out of the parents basement. At 26 I've outstayed my welcome (well I know they'll miss me ) but it looks like I'm going to be buying a house. Found a nice raised ranch with a 1.25 acres and a one car garage. We've been on the hunt and I was hoping this took place after Gonzukin. But due to a death in the family, house hunting, and my work. The zuk is not finished. Now I'm not sure if it will ever be finished. Buying this house means I've have to sell the Durango. I can't afford that car payment along with a mortgage. Thus I need a daily driver. Here's the kicker, I'm going to be getting engaged soon as well. So...I have to make choices, especially one that I don't want to make. I think I may sell the zuk, with the yota's, brand new 5.29's, detroits, 16valve, TT missing link, YJ's, shrockworks bumper and skid, etc. Needs about a day of wrenching to be mobile. In exchange, I may be buying my friends 97 Jeep TJ, with a 3.5 inch lift and 33's (no lockers though ) for $4,000. He's buying a house too and already has 2 other Jeeps. I'll be able to drive this daily and still go off the beaten path every now and again. I only wheeled about 5 times all of last year. So I question the need of an extreme (in my eyes) trail rig when money is in question. Everywhere I went in the Zuk this Heep made it..Well I did show him up a a few times. My other option is to keep the zuk, but I'll still need to have a car/ truck that can tow it. But then I'll have another payment...This sucks! Sorry but it does.

It does suck, but I'd wait on jumping to sell the whole project. In the meantime, you can get something that doesnt require a payment to tow the zuk. Get a big ugly pickup truck or an old, easy to work on station wagon or buick that someone is selling for 400 or 600$. Who says you have to buy something new or near-new? It might be kinda yucky to drive an older car or truck for a while, but you have been putting a lot of $ into your zuk and presumably that is over with. Save a little $ and a short while down the road you can look into getting a nicer DD/tow vehicle.

Hope you dont have to sell the zuk. You worked hard on that thing!

Sometimes you just have to make choices that you dont like. Then after you make them, you wonder if it was the right choice. Dont worry about it , you be making them the rest of you life.

Leave the axles 4.10's and drive the zook as a dd. get some at's for the road. (31's ) and you will be set. Unless you want the Jeep. then don't use the house as an excuse.

I feel your pain buddy. About 20 years ago, I sold my (then) prized SWEET 280Z to buy my first house. I got engaged and married within the year. Houses are real chick magnets Sorry to see you contemplating the move to a Heep , but you gotta do what you gotta do. You will be surprised how fast things come back together after getting into a house though.

Thanks guys, Daxe is thinking along the lines of what I had in mind. If I sell the Zuk, I'm really downgrading in terms of a trail vehicle. My parents don't even think its a good idea to get rid of...surprisingly. Anyone know of any cheap prefreably Toyota pickups around? Glen, I don't think I could use the Sami as a daily driver, I put 20k plus miles on a year and some of those are long trips in which I wouldn't trust the Zuk and wouldn't be all that comfortable. Don't get me wrong the Heep can be a great trail vehicle, but I'll be starting from scratch. In terms of beefier axles and lockers. Which would be at least a year or two away and twice as expensive.

Grrrrr, why I can't I hit the lottery!

Sounds like an econobox would be in order or if Fuel costs aren't a big issue them ask ANdy about a crown vic. you could tow with it and be comfy driving too. There are allways toy pickups in the wantad. and if you can't say JEEP then don't think about buying one.

I agree with your parents!

I sold my first zuk about 6 years ago cause I needed the money, and I didn't really have a place to store/work on it. Regretted it ever since.

Things to consider...

Selling a zuk is like throwing money away. Very rarely I see somebody get half of their money back. Look at the zuks in the for sale sections on all of the boards and on ebay. Often you will see "$7000 invested, will sacrifice for $2000"

Even though the zuk may not be the best daily driver, it would still be a good backup vehicle.

Owning a zuk is pretty cheap. Most of the work can be yourself, and the parts are very reasonably priced.

Re: Can\'t make Zukin..buying a house..come in and read

Just a couple of thoughts about your situation:

1. If you absolutely have to sell the zuk get it finished up. You probably won't get out of it what you've got in it but if it's not finished you'll have to sell for less yet. Put a tarp over it and hide it for a while.

2. Good luck selling a late model truck outright without making a bargain on it as well. When it's a "must sell" thing buyers are looking for blood. I just went through a similar deal with my 2000 Silverado. It just wasn't getting used much and our needs have changed (17 yr old daughter). To make a long story short I found an 02 5spd Tracker on a lot that just wasn't selling because of the 5spd. I was able to trade the truck and get the Tracker and cash (which will turn into a daughter car when we find one). Would've done a 2 for 1 trade but they just didn't have the right car. You can get creative with some of these car dealers, just know real values.

If you sell your zuk now what'll you do in 6 months when things settle back down? Your interests will still be the same.
Hate to see you sell it after all the blood, sweat, and tears...

Re: Can\'t make Zukin..buying a house..come in and read

If you need the 4K put it in the mortgage and keep the zuke. Do you know how much extra 4K adds to a 30 yr note. Not too much. In the world of house and house buying 4K isn't much. Just a good kitchen redo will set ya back 10 grand. Keep the Zuke. Jim
