Front third member exchangeability

I have searched, but want to be sure before I do this.

I have a spare front third member with hardly no miles onit, compared to 115000 on my current rear end.If I only change the spider gears in it do I have to CHANGE anything else(pre load) to use it in my rear end. This is my daily driver that is why I am asking .Thanks for any help.

Re: Front third member exchangeability

Side gears are inside the carrier. So yes, everything will have to be disassembled & put back together.

Brad.

Re: Front third member exchangeability

You will need to swap in the sidegears, and reset the backlash
and preload on the side bearings. you won't have to mess with the preload on the pinion. (don't mess with it at all. )
Do a search on here for the post where DougO goes indepth on gear setup.

Re: Front third member exchangeability

Thanks DougO that makes alot of sense.IMHO the search feature here needs to be improved upon.
Hopefully If my locker(for the front) shows up before the weekend I will get all this installed and put some hwy miles on everything to get them broke in alittle.

Re: Front third member exchangeability

Hey Doable..

the search feature works great if you know how to use it. I think it probably needs a built in explanation.

One of the things that first trips people up is that you need to select AND from the list box instead of "entire phrase", unless you are searching for a phrase, of course.

That alone can make the difference in getting a result or not.

Re: Front third member exchangeability

If you follow DougO's last post on that thread he brought up it will be hard to go wrong at all. First time I did it that way all was set just fine. I ended up setting mine up at .007 myself though. Some times with a used set its better to give a little more space(not sure why). But if you're at .006 yours may be ok...at .005 everything was still kinda stiff and my next turn on both the adjusters got me to .007 But some people go to .008 for a used set...im talking about back lash btw lol
