Finally Passed! (real long)

Well, after 2 years of trying, my Zuk finally passed NJ inspection!

When I purchased the zuk 2 years ago, I tried to run it through, but failed for emmisions. Totally lacked compression in the #3 cyl, and was blowing raw fuel throught the exhaust.

It sat for a while until I could have Sean DeVinney from Aftermarket 4x4 do the motor swap for me(1.6L), and a SPOA.

When I got the zuk back, I tried to run it through inspection again. When I got to the inspection station, they said that I had to go to a special site, to have a tilt test done, because "everyone knows that these things flip too easy".

I went to the second inspection station (Sept 2003), and was told that I had to make an appointment. Earliest they had available was in about 6 weeks, (Oct 2003)

I drove the Zuk down to Zuwharrie, and the tranny went on the way home (a few days before my inspection appointment)

I had to order a new tranny, and wait until I got it installed to reschedule. The tranny arrived, but so did the cold weather. Since I'm still wrenching in the driveway until the garage is built, I had to wait until the snow melted to install the new tranny.

Well, the warmer weather finally arrived, and the tranny was installed. Back to the inspection station for another appointment.

Well, Thursday was the big day. Zuk passed with flying colors, including the tilt test!

They also did a very thorough check on the whole vehicle, way above and beyond a normal NJ inspection. The welds on the SPOA lift were examined very closely (thanks Sean for doing such an awsome job!) They also lifted the front end, and checked for any looseness in the steering system.

I did find out some interesting things about the zuk. It weights about 2450lbs, and its about 150lbs heavier on the passenger side.

Well after all is said and done, I now have 2 large inspection stickers. One to say that it passed the normal inspection, then the second to prove that it went through the more rigorous modified vehicle inspection.

This attitude really gets to me.....
I was at a local Suzuki dealer and the parts guy made a remark about Samurais' needing training wheels.... I had all I could do to keep from going ballistic but I did think about reaching over the counter, grabbing him by the throat and bringing him outside to adjust his point of view....
I guess it's this attitude that helps keep our zooks affordable......
It just goes to show that the media can and does control the public's feelings......

I agree Crow.

Unfortunately it is also making them rarer by the day.

#1 . People are worried about driving a zuk because of the CR report.

#2. People worry that it won't pass inspection

#3. Zuks now have very little resale value

More and more of them wind up crushed for scrap, leaving fewer behind.

Re: Finally Passed! (real long)

I took mine through the Winslow station (south Jersey).

The other inspection stations that do lifted vehicles are in Asbury Park or Morristown.

You might be able to get a local shop to give you a regular sticker, but only those 3 state inspection stations can give the modified vehicle stickers.

I'm not sure most NJ cops would know the difference, or know to look for the extra sticker.

P.S. Where do you guys go wheeling in North Jersey?

Yeah, but if I remember correctly, wasn't VA the state that makes you pay property tax on your vehicles every year?

All things considered... I wish I didn't live in NJ either.

Re: Finally Passed! (real long)

I've only seen TN once, and it was very briefly. Very pretty country from what I did see.

I was also very impressed with West Virginia. We drove through on our way out to zookimelt last year. That has to be the most lush, beautiful land I have ever seen.

I would have loved to live out west for a few years. I did some hiking in Arizona and Nevada. Absolutely nothing like it in the east.

Oh well, I'm still married...
