Cali Smog Registration Woes...

So I went down to the referee station yesterday and ALMOST passed the smog test with flying colors.

The Ref says that I needed a 'check engine light' but there isn't one on the combi tach unit that I've got. The FSM shows an image of a combi tach unit with the "check eng light' but that slot on mine is a 'sensor' light...

OK guys here goes the question...
Are the combi units different from 88-92? Do the early ones have the 'check eng' while the later ones have the 'sensor'?
This is the ONLY thing holding me up from being totally Cali compliant... Please help if you can.

Thanks

Re: Cali Smog Registration Woes...

Personally I think your smog ref is an idot. The eailer Zukes only had a "sensor" light, which is controled by a small switch under the dash on the drivers side. I know this for a fact because mine's an 87 bought new and thats what it's got. All the carbed ones Iv'e seen have the same set-up. When they switched to FI, whatever year that was, they prolly changed the light to read check engine. Both lights as far as I know serve the same function. They are programed to come on at about every 60,000 for factory service or when a sensor, primarilly the O2, malfunctions.
As I stated earlier either your ref. is a total baboon, or he's taking great delight in jerking you off because you drive a modified rig.

Re: Cali Smog Registration Woes...

Per my owners manuals, 86 came with a "sensor" light, the 88.5 has a "check engine"
light, and both perform the same function, to indicate when to service the emissions
equipment, at 60K intervals for the 86, and 50, 80, 100 K miles for the 88.5... If it
comes on at other times, the equipment needs serviced now...

Re: Cali Smog Registration Woes...

I agree, the "sensor" and the "check engine" light are the same. I'v also seen "service engine", "O2 Sensor", "O2" and even "EGR" for the same function. That a$$hole is just yanking your chain!

On a side note, I'm glad to the see the wiring harness easily passed Ca. emissions!!

Re: Cali Smog Registration Woes...

Thanks outlawmws & Wahzoo...

The way I see it is that the guy wasn't savvy enough to run the jumper check with the 'sensor' light. I've got a buddy that has the OE Suzuki tool to actually talk to the ECM... so I'll know for certain here shortly (prolly in about 2 weeks)... the pain is that I have to dish out another fee and make another appointment with the Ref to pass... Hope I don't get stopped for registration

I'll keep youall posted as to the progress...

The only progress I'd be trying for is to get out of that Communist State . Been there , didn't even bother with a shirt . Only place I've been to that I'm not really enthusiastic about visiting again , folks just aren't real there .....

"Personally I think your smog ref is an idot."
"your ref. is a total baboon."
"The eailer Zukes only had a "sensor" light, which is controled by a small switch under the dash on the drivers side. I know this for a fact because mine's an 87 bought new and thats what it's got."

Per your rant, mine's also an '87, and it does indeed have a "Check Engine" light.
