Dilemna - you decide...

I found a NICE 1987 JX Convertible Samurai. It's clean, low mileage and in really decent shape. Here's the dilemna. It's on a piece of property that has more or less been abandoned and the owner cannot be found. A quick research of the property shows that the taxes have not been paid for the last 2 years. I spoke with neighbors who don't know where the owners are. Things are overgrown and the house is starting to look abandoned.

So, should I grab it? Leave it? Strip it where it sits
? Or, forget about it? Obviously, it cannot be put on the road for fear that someone, someday might wonder what happened to it. But, it would be a heck of a parts truck...

Re: Dilemna - you decide...

Can you at least grab the VIN and see who owns it? Maybe they would sell it cheap if they could be located.

Personally, I wouldn't grab it. Not the right thing to do. That rig belongs to someone, whether they're using it or not. Bad karma...

Cheers,
Steve

Re: Dilemna - you decide...

Chances are the rig belongs to someone other than the property owner. Could have been a buddy or relative who didn't have room to store it so they parked it on the property owner's land.

I agree with Hemo, do what you can to find the rightful owner. He may sell it to you for next to nothing anyway. It has to belong to someone.

I totally agree...Bad Karma. And, I hate to see this thing just rot out. Unfortunately, I can't run a VIN search in Maryland. I can only run a "license tag" search and there are no tags on it. I'll just forget about it...

Capn... If the only way to track a vehicle is by it's plates what is keeping people from just swapping from say one red sammi to another red sammi? How are vehicles kept track of?

I'd look into it a bit further. I wouldn't take it without asking... but knowing your deals you'll probably end up getting it for nothing.

Re: Dilemna - you decide...

VINs aren't considered public information at the Maryland Vehicle Administration. License plates are and unless a person specifically fills out the paperwork requesting that their information be kept private, anyone can find where you live... You have to be licensed (tow company, ins. co, etc) to be able to trace VINs.

Re: Dilemna - you decide...

There are sites on the web to trace VINs. Is this in
the US only maybe??? See if I can track one down.

Re: Dilemna - you decide...

outlaw is right look into the cost of the back taxes and where you would purchase the "said" property!!!!
I found 11 1/2 acres with a 3 bedroom modular and a (looked to be maybe a couple years old maybe 2 excellent condition) bass boat and trailer setting on the property for 60,000!!!! would have been an awsome deal if my credit rating would have agreed!!!!
anyhow point is you could be looking at a lot better deal then just a zuk for little cash and in return.... major profit upon resale!!!
