rear end knocking noise

Hi there, I just wanted to say first off that I just started coming on this board again now that i've moved back home from a 2year hiatis. I hadn't had the chance to touch my samurai for 2yrs and i'm damn glad to be able to play with it again. Infact it started up just fine after just charging the battery and gunning the throttle for a bit with my homemade manual choke wide open.

Anywayz, good to be back.

My trouble is that I've found a knocking noise from what sounds like the rear diff. well actually, it gets louder as you drive faster under torque. it you jack up the truck, you can't hear it as well from underneath as you can from standing next to the two rear wheels.

It sounds like a knocking or pinging that happens at a rate of about 3 or 4 times per rotation of the wheel. the faster I spin the tires the louder the sound.

ANY HELP?
thanks

It sounds like wheel bearings to me. Or maybe your spider gears are trashed?

Re: rear end knocking noise

3 to 4 times per rev huh? Rear gear ratio is 3.73, sounds like your pinion to me. Have you checked the diff fluid after being gone so long? Just a thought.
