Help Me Identify my engine

I am trying to figure out what year of 1.6 I have in my truck but I can't make sense of the numbers. According to the Chilton manual
1st digit = engine type
2nd & 3rd = displacement
4th = design sequence
5th through 10th = manufacturing sequence

The number I have on the engine block is 1590cm3. The 3 at the end looks like an exponent.

That is because you're looking at the wrong #'s. That 1590cm3 is the displacement. (CM3 is cubic centimeters) You need to look at the VIN # to verify the things you want... Of course that would have to be the VIN of the vehicle the motor came out of, which is probably long-gone somewhere unless you have the paperwork for the motor but then you'd already know the year. That is what that list, you have, is for.

Re: Help Me Identify my engine

Well, at least you know your engine displacement precisely! One thousand, five hundred and ninety cubic centimeters.

Re: Help Me Identify my engine

I believe the Chiltons manual had engine/year identification. I lost mine so I can't give any more info....

Could you give a little bit more information please? Are there any noticable scars, tatoos, missing teeth, how tall was it and what color, and anything else you can think of! Well hope it made ya smile for a min. or so. Thanks George; 3 ...........

Re: Help Me Identify my engine

just curious, why do you want to know the year?

also a picture would help us figure at least a year range your engine is.

Re: Help Me Identify my engine

Well, assuming the air intakes are somewhat intact...

for an 8v 1.6, the air intake will go directly out the side on the driver's side, whereas on the 16v 1.6 the intake will go to the front of the engine compartment on the driver's side.

Re: Help Me Identify my engine

It is like CTBRENT said, you need the VIN number. the 10th digit in the VIN number is the year. I don't have the info in front of me so I'll have to take it off the top of my head. I think it goes like this:

N 1990
P 1991
Q 1992
R 1993
S 1994
T 1995
U 1996
V 1997
W 1998
X 1999
Y 2000
1 2001
2 2002
3 2003
4 2004

That is it least close. The "S" may not have been used. I can get the specifics if you need them. Hope this helps.

Re: Help Me Identify my engine

OK, maybe this will be a little clearer...

Tenth vehicle identification number digit tells the model year. 1988 (J), 1989 (K), 1990 (L), 1991 (M), 1992 (N), 1993 (P), 1994 (R), 1995 (S), 1996 (T), 199 7(V), 1998 (W), 1999 (X), 2000 (Y)------2001(1), 2002 (2), 2003 (3)

Here is a link explaining the VIN. http://www.vehicleidentificationnumb...in_detail.html
