OT.....daily driver questions

OK I need to by a daily driver being that my current '96 Chevy S10 prerunner project has gone to sh*t(blown head gasket, 2 fuelpumps, water pump, coils, ecm, gas tank. ect.) 2.2L Chevys are crap. I'm looking at a comuter car and I have narrowed it down to three cars and want your guys opinion:
#1-- 2000+ Honda Civic 2 door/ 5 speed
#2-- 2000+ Ford Focus ZX3 5 speed
#3-- 1999+ VW Beetle TDI or 1.8T

What do you think? I modify everything I drive, and the Focus is in there cuz' I love WRC racing and it will see dirt roads same with the VW. As for the Honda....well its a ricer and it will have to stay on the street.

Re: OT.....daily driver questions

Well here's my opinion. I've never owned any of these, but I'd get them in the order you listed. I'd personally never drive a VW...thats my own personal opinion and the branding that my friends have given to drivers of VW's. Although Car and Driver loves the Focus, I've heard they can tend to nickel and dime you. But if you want a European riding car and a fairly quick and nimble one then the Focus is not a bad chouse. But.... Honda's are known to run forever and IMHO is the best looking of the bunch.

Re: OT.....daily driver questions

id vote for the civic......the VW's are nice but are expensive to fix.....the focus that i drove just seemed plain cheap and boring to drive....

there are a boat laod of aftermarket stuff for the civics and they run forever. i rarely hear anything bad about them....

and as for the 2.2L chevy i can agree...my gf's 96 cavalier had one i ended up replacing cheaper then i could rebuild it at 92,000 miles.....i can get low milage 2.2L's around here for about $250....

And thats to much..LOL I love the look of the 2nd gen S10s I added a 2" bodylift, 2" coils in the front, 31" BFG KOs on 15x8 Eagle alloys and have a set of 3" spindles to give it that prerunner look so popular here in cali. The down fall is the 2.2L, I've had to replace over $1000 in parts this year(some of it done by the dealer...BLING$$$) and now the head gasket is leaking on the #3 cylinder which is jerkin' the computer sensors around and probly cloggin' my new cat.....time for a new, dependable comuter. I haven't had a car in over 11 years so I'll see if I can live without a truck for awhile.

Re: OT.....daily driver questions

I would take that list, and flip it.

The VW, because you can't match the fuel milage, and you have European styling and flair. You get what you pay for.

I'm also a rally fan, and was considering either the Focus or TDi. The Focus costs half as much, which leaves alot of room for mods, which are relitavely cheap for the car. Euro styling, domestic price.

As for Civics.... bah, they're like opinions.... Every a$$hole has one! Too common.

Re: OT.....daily driver questions

i have sold both hondas and vw's and i am a chevy guy so this narrows one out. out of the vw and the civic i would have to go with the civic unless gas mileage is the #1 priority. i have owned probly 20-30 hondas and acuras and they are great well engineered vehicles that are designed to last ALONG time. the civic would be alittle more sporty than the tdi jetta. hope this helps!

Re: OT.....daily driver questions

Well first of all, I would forget the Focus. It will not hold it's value like the Honda or the VW. My wife has a 2003 Civic 2dr EX and it rides well and gets really good gas milage, about 39mpg on the interstate but the power is not all that great. She would be driving a 2003 Bettle 1.9 TDI if the VW dealer had not been so hard A$$ trying to deal with. That little diesel powered bettle rides great, gets 50 mpg and with a few cheap mods and a chip, the power can go up quiet a bit. I'd say go for either the Honda or the diesel bettle if fuel milage is a consideration. The 1.8 gas beetle is okay but the fuel milage doesn't compare to the Honda of the diesel and the power is not good either. The 1.8 turbo bettle runs good but the fuel milage is low as well.

MiniCooper S!

Cheap
Economical
Fun to Drive
German Engineering
etc.

Fords just suck
Hondas are good cars but have no soul.
VW is best out of that bunch I'd say.
