how much horse and torque does the 1.6L TD put out and how much would the 1.9L TD? what kind of gear ration do you guys think i should run?

1.6= around 60 hp, 90lb ft
1.9= around 100 hp, and 150 lb ft

Considering there torque monsters but torque only lasts through low to midrange RPMs, gear yourself to those RPMs.

For the trail you would be very happy with either, and most any gearing will do. For the street or dual use,
gearing gets difficult. Stock gears, stock Xfer, and the early 86-88 tranny will be needed as well as tall tires.

32's would be minimal and 34's - 35's prefered. A 1:1 High range xfer would help tremendously.

With 32's your going to be winding a VW diesel out pretty high to maintian freeway speeds.

Oh yeah, use gearing II, its a bit more user friendly.
