Brand Spanking New!

Hello all, just bought my Samurai a week ago and I love it!
I used to own a 200hp sports car, and this thing is much more fun to drive! So I just wanted to introduce myself to the community, and while I'm at it, I was hoping to ask a few questions about a few things going on with the truck...

When it is myself in the sammy, I notice that the drive is very rough. A clean start, from a stop, I'll get going a little bit and the Zuk starts to really buck. Now I can floor it to drive out the bucking, and then shift into 2nd, and the same thing happens again... Strange thing is, under load (2-4 people), it doesn't seem to drive rough at all! Once I start to get going, there is no bucking, it only seems to be happening in acceleration...

In 4H, she rumbles. It's gotta be something to do with the front diff, or transfer case, because there is no rumbling in 2wd. Also, I notice that in 4H, coasting down the street, I hear a grinding noise underneath my feet. Once again only in 4H. It does not grind under even the slightest bit of throttle, only off the pedal. Engage the clutch, and grinding stops. I tried searching for some info on the rest of the board, but couldn't find anything that was exactly like my problem... Any ideas? Are my transfer case gears grinding and causing the rumble?

Thanks all, and happy 4x4ing!

Welcome aboard, Jesse! One of the first things I would do is check and change all the fluids. God only knows how long ago it was done. Also while you are under there check the u-joints. Also do a thorough tune up:timing, plugs, etc. See if that may stop the bucking. HTH Jim

Re: Brand Spanking New!

What 87zuke said.

On the bucking, is it engine bucking or do you feel it in the steering?

I strongly suspect a bad Ujoint somewhere for the 4WD rumble.

It sounded like you were dirving it in 4WD on hard surfaces? Dont. the windup in the driveline will destroy
Ujonts and the Xfer. You should only engauge 4WD on dirt, mud snow, etc. to allow some slipage.

Welcome aboard!

Welcome aboard!

I've got a similar problem to your off-the-pedal grinding, but in all xfer case gears. I have no idea what it is, and I've given up trying to figure out. When something blows up, I'll know that was it. So far, its on 9 months of mystery noise, and hasn't gotten any worse.

Anyway, all the best!

Hi! I love to see people ecstatic over their new broken or should I say, well worn vehicles. Whatever you do... don't take it apart and keep it apart for too long that can only lead to bad things! Trust me on this one. Welcome aboard.
