Need Ideas and help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok heres a problem that I realy need some help with. Last week DannyL came down and bought my sami. He called border patrol and asked them what he would need from me to get it into Canada. They told him a bill of sale from the seller to him. So with that told to him he headed down to get it and when he got back to the border they told him he couldnt bring the sami into canada without a title or copy of a registation. So i went to the registry this morning to register it and come to find out i cant register a vehicle for another 6 months under my name in Rhode Island due to my past issues with my licence. And I was also told that you need a title or registration from the previous owner to register a vehicle in R.I. now. Thats new to me casue i have never had a problem before. Danny has the sami at a friends house in upstate New York. I feel really bad about this whole thing and both danny and i thought this would not be a problem casue of what border patrol told him before he came down. I hate the fact that he is having this problem after driving all the way down here and back to get the sami. I try to help out everyone i can on this bbs if i can. So i am asking if anyone has a way to help out with this problem or has any ideas on what could get this sami over the border Plese let me know as I cant get this off my mind and i dont like the fact the danny is having problems with this. I have tried eveything i can think of and nothing is panning out. the kid i bought it back from has no title or registration. I dont know what else to do or try and i want this to work out for danny. TIA.

Re: Need Ideas and help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've always wondered how the border patrol would treat the situation if you towed a complete vehicle with no motor or tranny and claimed it as a "parts" vehicle. You'd have to make a second trip to go pick up the motor and tranny, but it might prevent some hassles. Might be something to check into.

Re: Need Ideas and help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I recently bought a tintop from Sean (aftermarket 4x4) and ask him, it was a PITA. Not really, but things had to be coordinated to have the timing just right. You need to have a title, and then that title needs to be sent or dropped off, by you, to one of the border crossings. You have to know where he will be crossing into Canada, and if they have a US Customs office there to handle this title swap. But, you need to have the title there for AT LEAST 72 HOURS! That's right. Even if you had the title to give to him when he was there, he would have had to wait 72 hours at the border to be allowed to cross. They need that time to check the truck out, run the VIN, etc. What Sean did for me (and I can't thank him enough) was send the title to the Buffalo crossing a week ahead of time. I drove down to his place (12 hours away mind you!) got there at around 6-7pm, hopped back in the truck and headed back to Canada right away. Got to the border at around 8-9 am, and crossed with the title in hand.
Two important points: he has to cross from Monday to Friday 8-4pm. Reason being that the US office is only open at those times. It has nothing to do with Canada Customs. Also, he has to have the truck with him when crossing. They want to see it. Also, if it's newer than 15 years, have fun. Lots of paper work, and $$$ to spend. In fact, I don't even think a Samurai can cross over if it's newer than 15. Something with CSA standards..... not sure.
Good luck on the sale, I know, it was tough at times but went smooth when I had it all sorted out. Thanks again Sean, great truck!

Cheers,
Steve

I guess fording it across a great lake is out of the question...? That really sucks... clear the stuff up and get the paperwork. Legal-wise that is the best way. It's a good thing he had a place to keep it though.

just put it in your brothers name and then send him the title and a new bill of sale or registration and that should solve the problem or you can find a copy of your old reg from when it was in your name just my 2 cents hope it helps

Would it be possible to switch VIN plates with a parts vehicle that has a good title?

Re: Need Ideas and help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Steve, I have a VIN plate still on a dash and a legit VA title to go with it for an 88 sami. I could $ it to you if it would help. Or maybe if you still have that green tracker with no title I could swap you the title and VIN for some of the $ towards takin that off your hands. i got tracker fever.
