Motor Diagnosis, No Compression at all ?

started to look into a Samurai I have with a motor problem today, pulled the dist cap and its spinning so I figure the timing belts ok, check a spark plug and its getting fire, then I put my new compression guage in the spark plug holes and got no compression reading at all, OK help me here, I am new to motor diagnosis but figure I should get at least SOME compression. The motor is turning over well and I know ALL the rods cant be broken, help me out here, WHAT DO YOU THINK?

THanks

Mark

Turning with the starter or by hand?

Do you have the throttle plate wedged down to the floor?

Motor Problem--full extent

You said: started to look into a Samurai I have with a motor problem today,

Somehow, we got the drift that you knew there was an engine issue BEFORE you checked the compression. Did the seller tell you this? How did you know? Tell us what you learned about the vehicle BEFORE you attempted to determine compresion.

That will help a lot in determining why there is no compression.

Re: Motor Diagnosis, No Compression at all ?

I bought the zuk knowing the motor was bad, the previous owner just said it quit on him coming home from work one day, would not run at all, he parked it out of the way and I bought it after it sat for 1 year. Thats all I know about the motor, I started trying to diagnose it today.

Weird. Do you know for a fact your compression guage works?

Re: Motor Diagnosis, No Compression at all ?

This engine is very good at having burned valves. Also, just because the distributor is turning, doesn't mean it's timed right. As in it may have jumped time without throwing the belt completely off.

Correct on the timing, if it's way off like 90* off, it'll try to compress with open valves, lol.
